NCAA College Basketball Coaches Indicted in Fraud Case
Federal prosecutors announced charges against him Tuesday morning after Evans allegedly took cash bribes to deliver athletes to an adviser or agent. "Coaches hold a unique position of trust with student-athletes and their families and these bribery allegations, if true, suggest an extraordinary and despicable breach of that trust".
Prosecutors said Person accepted $91,500 of bribes over 10 months from a financial adviser, who was secretly cooperating with prosecutors, in exchange for steering NBA-worthy Auburn players to hire the adviser and buy suits from Michel.
One of them, Lamont Evans, worked under current University of IL head coach Brad Underwood when Underwood was the head coach at Oklahoma State University.
Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder released a statement saying he was "shocked" by the allegations and learned about them through media reports.
Joon Kim, the acting US attorney in Manhattan, told a press conference the defendants showed "contempt" for players and coaches who follow the rules.
Evans had arranged a February 3 meeting with Blazer, Carroll and himself while OSU was in West Virginia for a conference game against the Mountaineers the following day.
Jim Gatto, the director of global sports marketing in basketball for Adidas, was among those charged in the investigation.
Evans is now an assistant at Oklahoma State, and his charges allegedly stem from his work at SC.
"We are committed to playing by the rules, and that's what we expect from our coaches", he said.
They said Person also claimed to pay $18,500 of that sum to two players' families. Of course, we will cooperate with investigators and we look forward to justice being done in this case.
Underwood, now the head coach at IL, hired Evans as his assistant and recruiting coordinator when he was named head coach at Oklahoma State in 2016 following the firing of Travis Ford. They also said the university maintains high standards of conduct, and that deviation from those standards would not be tolerated. "These are serious accusations that are not consistent with University of SC values". "Because this is an ongoing criminal matter, we will have no further comment".
