President Donald Trump was apparently so inspired by France's Bastille Day parade that he has proposed holding a similar event in the US next July 4.

Macron chuckled as Trump recalled the "beautiful thing" he witnessed in Paris, saying one of his "early calls" when he returned to the White House was for creating a US-version.

This had been put right in July when Mr Trump visited Paris.

Macron rode in the Bastille Day parade standing upright in an open-top military command auto, surrounded by hundreds of military guards on horseback. "These were two unbelievable hours in which we saw military power and I think it was great for France and its spirit".

French President Emmanuel Macron says he isn't about to quit trying to convince President Donald Trump to reverse himself on his decision to exit the climate accords - and thinks he will succeed.

"So we are thinking of holding a really big parade on July 4, on Pennsylvania Boulevard, to show our military strength", Trump added.

He noted that France's parade featured representatives from different wars and armed forces wearing different uniforms. "I don't know, we're gonna have to try to top it". I mean, we're going to be showing our military, ' he told the Washington Post then. During the Cold War, the practice was avoided as it was feared that it would look like the USA was mimicking the Soviet Union.

Brian Hook, director of policy planning for the State Department, who sat in on the meeting, said Trump told Macron that the Bastille Day parade was very inspiring.

During a January interview with The Washington Post, President-elect Trump spoke of a desire to use such a parade "to display our military".

"What will happen in the future?"

The US does not have a history of major military parades marching through its cities, except to celebrate wartime victories. The parade usually includes military vehicles and flyovers, and Trump was visibly happy during the event.

One thing Trump may want to consider: the damage a tank could do to the asphalt as it rolls down Pennsylvania Avenue.
