Joy Reid Crushes New Obamacare Repeal Bill With Damning Analysis Of Who It Would Hurt

Interestingly, while trying to craft legislation that would appeal to Republican moderates in the Senate, Cassidy and Graham have created a plan that is in some ways more conservative than the earlier House and Senate repeal-and-replace bills. But some of the same GOP senators who blocked various stages of earlier repeal efforts are withholding their support.

But, one of the worst aspects of this particular bill is the fact that it will allow insurance companies to raise your rates if you get sick.

Meanwhile, Graham told Breitbart on Saturday that almost 20 Republican governors had already pledged their support of his bill. You also may recall some Republican senators called a press conference to emphasize it was a bad bill and they were voting for it exclusively to keep the repeal effort alive, and assuring citizens it would be improved in reconcilliation with the House. The authors of the bill say they intend to reduce expected federal payments to high-cost states like MA and increase federal payments to states that have not expanded Medicaid. "It is his dream and that's where Democrats are going".

You'd think Graham-Cassidy would be catnip for a number of the 17 Republican governors from non-expansion states, many of whom are itching for the freedom to cut Medicaid anyway. At the moment, there's a sense that they have 49 votes in the Senate, just one vote shy of passing the thing and sending it to the House. If the Senate does not vote by the end of next week, it will become almost impossible to repeal the law because the drive to kill the Affordable Care Act will lose the procedural protections that allow it to pass the Senate with a simple majority, rather than the 60 votes that would otherwise be needed.

"We expect regular staff briefings and member discussions to continue", David Popp, a McConnell spokesman, said in an email Monday.

As Sanders made clear, the Graham-Cassidy Bill is as draconian as previous repeal-and-replace bills. It would also decrease funding for Medicaid in the future. "Of course, block grants are much better than other ways to do things ... but again, this is a very serious question, and I'm studying it very closely". "In the short-term non-expansion states may see gains under the bill given redistribution of ACA related spending streams".

"There is tremendous flexibility for states under Cassidy-Graham, but also tremendous responsibility". Some Republican senators are nervous about the measure's impact on their own states, and the lack of CBO projections won't help allay their concerns.

The proposed overhaul would give power to the states through a block grant scheme.

Politico reports that McConnell said if the Graham-Cassidy bill has support from 50 of the 52 Republican senators he would bring it to the floor for a vote.

And, crucially, a year ago far too many people were complacent; they assumed that Trump couldn't possibly become president, so they felt free to engage in trivial pursuits.

And then there's President Donald Trump, who has said little publicly about Graham-Cassidy, even though he devoted several tweets last week to slamming Sen.

"I applaud the Senate for continuing to work toward a solution to relieve the disastrous Obamacare burden on the American people", Trump said in a statement.

But the party has failed to repeal Obamacare or enact a replacement system, despite controlling the Senate, the House and the White House since the November 2016 elections.
