North Korea crisis: US and South Korea to 'maximise pressure' on Pyongyang as Trump approves multi-billion dollar weapons deal

The weekend explosion was Pyongyang's strongest-ever nuclear test and follows launches in July of an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the USA mainland.

At the US base in South Korea will deploy four additional THAAD missile defense system on the background of aggravation of the situation around the DPRK.

He also said it was "ridiculous" that the United States first slapped Russian Federation with sanctions carried in the same bill that penalised North Korea, and "then asked us to help impose sanctions on North Korea". Components of the Thaad battery arrived at the US military's Osan Air Base on March 7, 2017 and a radar system and two launchers were installed on a former golf course in Seongju on April 26 - less than two weeks before the May 9 presidential election that brought Moon Jae-in to power.

Although the ministry did not provide an exact time for the installation, a residents' group cited by Yonhap said it had confirmed the plan "through various channels", adding that it was due to take place at 2am local time on Thursday.

In a telephone conversation with Mr Putin on Monday, he urged Russia's support for stronger sanctions against North Korea, such as cutting off oil supplies and banning the use of exported North Korean workers who are seen as a key foreign currency source for Pyongyang.

South Korean local residents are protesting against the US THAAD deployment missile systems.

U.S. President Donald Trump seized the opportunity to chide Moon for his conciliatory attitude towards North Korea before these tests, tweeting on Sunday, "South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!"

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for talks with North Korea, saying sanctions are not a solution.

The South Korean government is expected to deploy several thousand police to accompany the missiles, in anticipation of resistance and possible confrontation.

While North Korea claimed to possess a hydrogen bomb a year ago, seismologists refuted the claim, suggesting that the subsequent natural disaster from that nuclear test was too small to have been the product of a pure fusion weapon.
