Missing Temple college student found dead; suspect found with 'scratches on his face' and blood spatter inside apartment
Police say Hupperterz was taken into custody Saturday in Paupack Township in northeastern Pennsylvania and charged with several crimes Sunday.
The suspoect, who is a former student at high-ranking Temple - where Burleigh was enrolled - was also charged him with drugs offences after finding large quantities of marijuana and $20,000 (£15,500) in cash.
He later allegedly told police that he was too drunk to remember who she was.
Investigators said they do not believe Hupperterz and Burleigh had a prior relationship and the killing does not appear to be premeditated.
The body of Jenna Burleigh, 22, was found on Paupack Township property belonging to the grandmother of the prime suspect in the student's death.
A woman listed as the owner of the Wayne County home where Burleigh's body was found paid his bail during those initial charges, court documents showed.
State police at Honesdale assisted Philadelphia police and the FBI with the current investigation.
A Times-Tribune story reported that Hupperterz, who was 25 at the time, broke into a Taylor Avenue home in Scranton in July 2013 and tried to steal a half keg of beer from a shower stall, among other items.
Temple University president Richard M. Englert said in a statement the community was "deeply saddened" to learn of Burleigh's death. She was majoring in film and media expressions.
Burleigh was with Hupperterz at around 2 a.m.at Pub Web near Temple's main campus. Burleigh, 22, whose father reported her missing Thursday, died from the "combined effects of blunt trauma and strangulation", Wayne County Coroner Edward R. Howell said in an autopsy report released Sunday. "Particularly thinking about the heartache and grief that those parents must be going through right now".
Family member Ed Burleigh said Saturday on Facebook "Our Beautiful Angel Jenna is now in Heaven". "Now I know for sure that you can have a "broken heart" RIP honey".
