Sun Valley fire prompts road closures and home evacuations in Los Angeles

Brush fire in Sun Valley closes 210 freeway with flames and high winds

Fire broke out around a major freeway in the Sun Valley area of Los Angeles on Friday (Sept 1) afternoon, forcing the shut down of a 20.9km stretch of the roadway and threatening nearby homes.

Carol Smith, a National Weather Service meteorologist, told the Los Angeles Times that a combination of weather conditions were working against firefighters: temperatures of up to 106 degrees, 50-mph gusts of wind and unstable air.

The La Tuna fire has reportedly grown to about 8,000 acres, prompting mandatory evacuations in some areas, reports Xinhua news agency. The winds spread the blaze in the several directions.

Homes in Burbank and Sunland-Tujunga were evacuated as a brush fire grew to 5,000 acres, which Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said was the largest fire by acreage in his city's history.

The man charged with starting the fire, John Ballenger, made his first court appearance in Butte County Superior Court on Friday, District Attorney Michael Ramsey said.

In Montana, Governor Steve Bullock declared a state of disaster on Friday due to wildfires as dozens raged across tens of thousands of acres during one of the worst fire seasons in state history. No reports of injuries or building damage have been reported. Although firefighters quickly extinguished the bulk of that fire, high winds caused embers to jump across the highway, sparking a spot fire north of I-210, Stewart said.

Three structures have been destroyed including two homes, have indicated the fire department (LAFD).

Israel lawmakers tour Jerusalem's Aqsa after 2-year ban
This is something Israel can not accept. "This is something the United Nations should not accept", he said. On Tuesday, the secretary-general is scheduled to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The city's officials would have to reassess that plan if the winds "just pick up and go wild", he said.

"Pets are welcome at the shelters too, so don't leave your pets behind, we will make sure we accommodate them as well", Garcetti said.

Torrid temperatures that have broiled the Southland for much of the week persisted Saturday amid a massive brush fire in the Burbank area and continued calls for residents to conserve electricity.

At a certain point, firefighters were dealing with 40 miles per hour winds and flames 100 feet in height, according to the L.A. Times.

Firefighters donned night vision goggles as they performed overnight water drops to "to take the heat out of the head of the fire".

The week-long heat wave was generated by high pressure over the west of the USA, the National Weather Service said.
