Apple is nixing the button in favor of a larger screen that takes up nearly the entire front of the phone, according to leaked schematics published by Bloomberg. Instead of a physical home button, there's going to be a thin, software bar.

Apple's September 12 event, however, will not only be all about the iPhone, as the company is expected to unveil several other products. A new Apple Watch, potentially including onboard support for a dedicated cellular connection and HomePod, Apple's forthcoming smart speaker, which the company revealed in June at its annual developers conference.

Shares in the tech giant reached a record intraday high of US$162.96 yesterday and have risen to US$163.31 in USA pre-market trading following reports that it plans to unveil its next iPhone on 12 September.

Replacing the iconic home button with a gesture area is actually a pretty fundamental shift in the interaction model of iOS.

I don't think the concept of a premium iPhone will be a one-off - I expect Apple to release relatively high-priced iPhone models each year with features that are too costly, or that simply can not yet be manufactured in high volumes, for the mainstream iPhone models at mainstream price points. Every current iPhone owner knows that swiping up from the bottom of the screen brings up quick controls for wireless connections, the flashlight, and more.

Apple is also rumored to be preparing to launch three versions of the next iPhone. Apple traded up $1.44 for the day and closed at $162.91Specifically, Director Arthur D. Levinson sold 35,000 shares of the company's stock in a transaction that occurred on Monday, August 7th.

That means one of the biggest interface changes in the iPhone's 10-year history. Facial scanning technology already has been seen on other phones, including Samsung Corp.'s (SSNLF) Galaxy S8 smartphone, released in April, and its Note 8 phone, expected to launch September 15. Recent rumors claim that AAPL is switching to facial recognition for its newest iPhone due to trouble placing Touch ID under a display. The status bar will also reportedly "change based on the task at hand", although exactly how is unclear.

The phone is also rumoured to feature wireless charging thanks to new design features being built into the phone. The iOS charging procedure would be able to check whether the pad providing the inductive power is licensed by Apple else the iPhone would refuse the incoming charge. And the device's announcement will most likely be paired with the announcement of updated iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models, traditionally branded as "S" devices to indicate the hardware revision.
