The Palestinians called on the White House to intervene, and visiting U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres challenged Netanyahu's comments, reiterating the global community's opposition to Israeli settlements.

The visit comes amidst tensions between Israel and the UN.

"It is also building sites to produce precision-guided missiles toward that end in both Syria and in Lebanon", he said, stressing that neither Israel nor the United Nations can accept this.

Netanyahu recently accused Iran of building the production sites two weeks after an Israeli television report showed satellite images it said were of a facility Tehran was constructing in northwest Syria to manufacture long-range rockets.

The Palestinians received a boost from Guterres, who assured them the global community remains solidly behind the goal of Palestinian independence and rejects Israeli settlements, which he called illegal and a "major obstacle" to peace.

Guterres is likely to seek to push Israel and Palestinian leaders closer to renewed talks on their decades-old conflict during his three-day visit that ends Wednesday, but the interests of Israeli leaders lie elsewhere for now.

During the meeting، Netanyahu expressed the hope that Guterres' visit to Israel would herald a warming of relations between Israel and the UN.

"We are not going to state what the outcome has to be", Nauert said in response to a question about the two-state solution.

Conflict in Myanmar Worsens, Nearly 100 People Killed
Deadly violence has worsened in Myanmar's Rakhine state in the last three days from Sunday 27 August 2017, with almost 100 people killed.

Trump has said he wants to reach the "ultimate deal", but he himself has cast doubt on the two-state solution, saying he could support a single state if it meant peace.

The Palestinians have expressed impatience with the White House, which has not yet offered a plan for forging peace despite United States president Donald Trump's early pledges to pursue what he calls "the ultimate deal".

This is something Israel can not accept. "This is something the United Nations should not accept", he said.

Shuli Moalem-Refaeli, an MK for the far-right Jewish Home party, also toured the area during Tuesday's one-day trial period, which was allowed by police after nearly two years of restrictions on lawmakers entering the flashpoint mosque compound.

"We are determined to prevent any threat to the security of the citizens of Israel", Mr. Lieberman said, according to a transcript of his remarks from his office.

On Tuesday, the secretary-general is scheduled to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

He said Israel is getting away with grave violations and no one is holding it accountable for its actions, foremost of which is its intense settlement activity, land confiscation, detentions, killing of Palestinians, demolitions of homes and many other violations.
