Great News, Jaguars Fan! Blake Bortles Is Your Starting Quarterback

27 August 2017, 12:37 | Stacy Ballard

Jacksonville's only QB competition should be between Chad Henne and Brandon Allen

NFL-National Football League roundup

Head coach Doug Marrone didn't rule out playing Chad Henne and Blake Bortles in the fourth game of the preseason. On Thursday, Henne completed eight of 14 passes for 73 yards and no touchdowns with no interceptions. In five possessions Bortles completed 12-of-16 passes for 125 yards and directed two touchdown drives.

Jacksonville selected Bortles, who played his college football at the University of Central Florida, with the third overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He amped up his workload this week in preparation for the team's third exhibition, quite possibly the only action he'll get in the preseason.

Going back to Bortles was a clear indictment of the team's shaky offensive line, which has been underwhelming in three preseason games. Sixth-round selections may just surprise you, as I believe one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game was drafted that late. "Like I said to you guys earlier in the week, I'm not going to stand up here and comment a lot on the two". The team is poised for success; they just need a competent leader under center to earn their trust.

Six days later, Marrone has seen enough, and it does not bode well for Bortles.

With what we've seen from training camp and the preseason, Blake Bortles doesn't seem to have corrected the issues that have plagued him as a starter in the NFL.

As bad as Bortles has been in the last couple of years, the Jaguars are making a necessary move as the AFC South is fairly wide open and they are legitimately a quarterback away from contending out of that division. He's 5-17 as a starter for the Jaguars but has not appeared in a regular season game since he was benched in favor of Bortles in 2014.

Jacksonville had all offseason to figure out the quarterback situation.

He showed flashes like his 31-yard deep throw to wideout Allen Robinson in the second quarter.

"I'm going to go play as hard as I can".

"You can sit there and say, 'Well, it's happened once already, it could happen again, ' and worry about that and kind of let that consume your thoughts", Bortles said.
