Kasich: We're all rooting for Trump to 'get it together'

"The president and first lady have decided not to participate in this year's activities to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction", press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement, adding that the president and Melania Trump "extend their sincerest congratulations and well wishes to all of this year's award recipients for their many accomplishments".

Donald Trump wore proper safety glasses to look at the solar eclipse that crossed the USA today - at least at first. It is unclear if he looked directly at the sun.

According to the White House pool report, an aide shouted "don't look" at the president as he gestured toward the sun.

Mr Trump watched the rare spectacle from the Blue Room Balcony at the White House - hundreds of miles away from the eclipse's path of totality - next to his wife Melania and son Barron. Trump turned away as soon as someone yelled, "Don't look". The moon covered 81% of the sun at the eclipse's peak in Washington.

Moon says more will be done for national heroes
The North's news agency, KCNA, warned on Monday that a conflict could be sparked with "a minor incident". It added: "We are watching every single thing in the United States".

Solar glasses are a must for anyone who wants to view the eclipse.

The eclipse was the first since the founding of the republic that will pass directly over only this country, and it traversed a 3,000-mile path, from OR through Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, before finally disappearing off the coast of Charleston, S.C.at 2:49 p.m.

While the three had solar eclipse glasses, which protect your eyes as you stare directly at the sun, Trump initially looked up without eye protection.

The solar eclipse was over from coast to coast in 90 minutes.
