Chinese tourists detained over Nazi salute in Berlin

Chinese tourists arrested in Germany for doing Nazi salute outside parliament: Report

Modern Germany has banned the Nazi party and its imagery and symbols, which can now only be used for educational or historic research.

The Reichstag building was where the Third Reich met from 1933 - 1945 and was the location for many of Hitler's speeches.

Berlin said the men were seen in front of the building that houses the German parliament making the "Heil Hitler" salute and photographing each other with their mobile phones, Reuters reported. The offense can be punished with a sentence of up to three years imprisonment.

For the two men who thought nothing of saluting in the style of Hitler outside the Reichstag, a judge ordered each to post 500 euros, or about $589, in bail.

The pair of Chinese tourists were charged under Germany's criminal code that prohibits the "use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations", including "flags, insignia, uniforms, slogans and forms of greeting".

The embassy suggested that tourists traveling overseas from China should take care to respect local laws and raised concerns that such controversies would harm the country's image.

A criminal investigation will continue, though the tourists are being permitted to leave the country with their tour group, a police spokeswoman said Sunday.

In 2011, police arrested a Canadian tourist for giving the hateful salute while taking pictures outside the Reichstag.

The Post reported the Chinese government has expressed concern in the past for "embarrassing behavior" by Chinese tourists traveling overseas and has encouraged travelers to respect local laws and customs.
