45 senators call on Mattis to resist Trump's transgender military ban

Trump says his administration will block transgender people from serving in the military

Ex-Navy doc vows free surgery for transgender military patients

If Trump's announcement is implemented, it would reverse the Department of Defense's October 2016 dissolution of a pre-existing transgender military ban stating, "Effective immediately, transgender Service members may serve openly, and they can no longer be discharged or otherwise separated from the military exclusively for being transgender individuals".

Last year, then-Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that transgender individuals serving in the military would no longer be forced to leave.

Trump's announcement on a transgenderism ban in the US military comes as a bill to provide Pentagon with a funding of more than $700 million is debated upon. When the question of whether the military's interests trump all is put squarely to Americans, they split down the middle - although no doubt some question Trump's premise that trans soldiers necessarily cause "disruption" and "tremendous" costs to begin with.

However, estimates from studies by the New England Journal of Medicine and the RAND Corporation have found that the cost of transition-related care for the estimated 15,000 transgender service members in the Armed Forces would be negligible, particularly in light of the military's multi-billion dollar budget.

Catholic Online hailed the transgenderism ban as a victory for Christians, pointing to Pope Francis' reminder in Amoris Laetitia that "the young need to be helped to accept their own body as it was created". Thorn pointed out that the current service chiefs signed off on the Obama policy previous year and that "those individuals haven't changed".

"We will provide detailed guidance to the Department in the near future for how this policy change will be implemented".

"There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President's direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance", Dunford said. Trans people serve in the military at higher rates than cis people do, and that is only counting the trans people we know about who transitioned after they got out.

Donald Trump sacks Priebus, names new WH Chief of Staff
While the secretary of state sought to quell tensions, Trump came out with a tweet that essentially sided with the Saudis. But it had been obvious for some time from news reports that Priebus seemed to be on thin ice in the Trump White House.

Ultimately, everyone in America overreacted to an announcement that isn't even policy.

"Banning any qualified person from serving their country because of who they are is both discriminatory and bad national security policy", Gallego wrote.

President Donald Trump has reversed yet another policy decision of the Obama administration.

"I totally support the President in his decision", Perry, who served in the Air Force for five years, said late last week, according to the Texas Tribune. Trump also undercut Mattis, who announced a six-month study on the issue in June. "In fact, research has shown that trans veterans would want to return to the military if the environment allowed for it".

For its part, the Pentagon has said that transgender members of the services will remain and be "treat (ed) with respect" until the White House sends new rules on the matter.

In sum, despite the President's ominous tweets, transgender soldiers continue to serve openly and proudly in every branch of our nation's military.

Those sentiments are now playing out on a more national stage, and if Friday's poll is any indicator, with potential repercussions for Trump.
