Unidentified gunmen have attacked the rural home of Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto's home near the western city of Eldoret, reports say.

None of the DP's family member was at the residence during the attack.

A police officer guarding the residence was wounded, KTN News reported.

Close to 500 heavily armed police officers have been deployed at the home and neighbouring areas.

The media and public have been barred to about 500metres from the home and Rift Valley Regional Coordinator and Uasin Gishu County Commander are on scene.

The incident happened a few minutes after Ruto left for a political rally in a neighbouring town.

Kuwait Cuts Number of Iranian Diplomats in Country from 19 to 4
Kuwait has made a decision to shut down Iran's cultural attaché office in the country and reduce the number of Iranian diplomats. The cell was convicted by a lower court early past year but acquitted on appeal months later and set free.

He said the attacker hit the officer severally before gaining access to the home.

Meanwhile, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi said in a statement the attack was a security threat not only to the DP but entire country.

"The injured officer is undergoing treatment and is in a stable condition", Boinnet said, adding that Ruto's house was secure.

A senior government official said an operation was ongoing to subdue the attackers, whose motives are unclear.

Mr Ruto was not at home at the time.
