Toyota Long-Range EV Set to Arrive in 2022

Toyota plans long-range, fast-charging electric cars, paper says

Toyota leads in hybrids such as the C-HR but is now putting more resource into developing technologies for full BEVs planned for market introduction in the early 2020s

Toyota has only recently expressed interest in pure electrics, as opposed to plug-in hybrids, but a new report says the auto giant is planning to leapfrog early electric vehicle leaders by debuting an EV with all-solid-state batteries by 2022.

Six years ago we reported that Toyota was working with the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization to develop a new solid-state battery with a 600 mile range, which would be quick to charge and cheap to build. The newspaper reports that other automakers are also developing solid-state batteries for next-generation electric cars. The new EV will reportedly go on sale in Japan first.

Toyota has not commented on Chunichi Shimbun's report directly, but a company spokeswoman told Reuters that Toyota seeks to commercialize solid-state batteries by the early 2020s. "2022 is ages away, and a lot can change in the meantime". The first model to reach the production lines won't be a dedicated electric auto and will be based on the current C-HR.

Israel to reopen sensitive Jerusalem holy site
Palestinian rioters clashed with Israeli police on Tuesday night in Jerusalem's Old City for the second night in a row . Under the status quo that governs Muslim and Jewish access to the Mount, Jews are prohibited from praying there.

Solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes rather than liquid ones, making them safer than lithium-ion batteries now on the market. How quickly the new EVs will catch on would also depend largely on battery costs.

The automaker plans to start mass production of electric vehicles in China by 2019.

While Toyota has developed a reputation for making hybrids and plug-in hybrid vehicles, namely with its Prius family, it chose to develop the hydrogen-powered Mirai instead of a dedicated electric vehicle.
