Audi to Modify Up to 850000 Diesel Vehicles as Carmakers Face Backlash

Audi announces retrofit programme for 850000 diesel cars

German carmakers Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, BMW and Daimler secretly worked together from the 1990s onwards on issues including polluting emissions from diesel vehicles, news magazine Der Spiegel reported.

A committee will be set up to measure the impact of updating diesel cars on individual communies and cities, with a view to averting bans of diesel engined cars, the sources said.

BMW fell 2.8 per cent, Daimler 2.6 per cent and Volkswagen 2.5 per cent. Shares also fell Friday after Der Spiegel published its findings online.

According to the report, carmakers held "innumerable meetings" from 2006 onwards about diesel exhaust processing systems created to reduce emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx).

The companies allegedly met to discuss AdBlue tanks, which deliver the urea that purifies diesel emissions in numerous brand's cars.

European Union commissioner for industry, Elzbieta Bienkowska has written to Europe's transport ministers threatening to ban diesel vehicles unless these are cleaned up by the year end, Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung said. Germany's Federal Cartel Office is investigating the matter, and previously looked at six companies previous year regarding collusion on steel prices.

Humans Have Produced 8,3 Billion Metric Tonnes of Plastic Since 1950
In 2015, environmental engineer Jenna Jambeck found that about 19 billion pounds of plastic waste ends up in our oceans each year. Out of the eight billion tons of plastic, about half has been made in the past 13 years and six billion finished as waste.

The software refit will also apply to Porsche and Volkswagen models equipped with the same engines.

BMW AG yesterday rejected allegations of cheating on diesel emissions and downplaying talks with rivals as aimed at promoting exhaust-treatment technology in Europe.

Daimler tried to get ahead of things this week by recalling 3 million diesel vehicles in Europe for a free emissions-system adjustment.

Car-maker Audi has announced today (21 July) that it is to refit software in over 850,000 of its Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel vehicles sold worldwide due to concerns over emissions. These discussions also touched on supplier choice and component price, and they allegedly all agreed to use smaller AdBlue tanks. On the public road, these cars were emitting far more nitrogen oxide than the law allows. Audi is aware that the investigations by the KBA have not yet been concluded.

Mercedes-Benz Korea's decision came in line with Daimler's previous call to provide "voluntary service actions" for 3 million vehicles in Europe, nearly all Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel vehicles.

BMW said it used a number of systems, including urea injection with AdBlue and NOx-storage catalytic converters, to fulfil all legal emissions requirements.
