A 86-year-old jewel thief was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, after she stole $86 worth of merchandise from a local Walmart. She is even the subject of a documentary titled "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne".

A shop employee observed her stealing several items from the pharmacy, electronics and grocery departments.

Payne was raised in West Virginia and moved with her family to OH when she was a teenager.

Payne allegedly attempted to steal only food and medical supplies, as opposed to her usual target, jewelry. For six decades, Payne has been accused of robbing stores across the United States and overseas, from Paris to suburban Walmart, with more than 20 arrests and years of jail time. I regret getting caught, ' she said in her documentary.

Her biggest known theft came in the 1970s when she was arrested for clipping a $500,000 diamond ring.

After her arrest, a judge initially refused to release her on bond, noting that Payne had previously listed her occupation on court records as "jewelry thief", the Los Angeles Times reported. Payne also said that she had told the cashier about it before leaving the store. "This doesn't fit into anything she has done before and we are going to look at the video and see what's going on, see if this is maybe forgetfulness", he added, according to WFAA, affiliated to ABC News.

When the associate pulled out items, she would keep them distracted by pulling out more so that eventually they would forget how many items they had placed on the counter, giving Payne the opportunity to swipe an item or two. At the time, police in Charlotte, North Carolina had a warrant out for her arrest for allegedly stealing a $32,000 engagement ring.

Police say that Doris has had over 22 aliases and has probably gotten away with more theft than anyone could really know. In the film she said "There's never been a day that I went to steal that I did not get what I went to do". "At my office, we're treating this like her life is on the line", he said.
