10 Egyptian soldiers die in North Sinai car bombing

Egyptian authorities say 10 military personnel have been killed after a bomb and heavy gunfire in the Sinai

A suicide vehicle bomber reportedly targeted a checkpoint outside Rafah, a border town near the Gaza Strip, before dozens of gunmen opened fire.

At least 10 Egyptian soldiers were killed and several injured when two suicide vehicle bombers hit army checkpoints in northern Sinai on Friday, security sources said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Egypt faces waves of anti-security attacks led by IS branch in North Sinai, since the army-led ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 in response to mass protests against his rule.

Egyptian officials say at least 10 security troops have been killed when a auto bomb struck a military checkpoint followed by heavy gunfire in northeastern Sinai Peninsula.

The sources said the militants belong to Sinai-based Sinai State group, which declared loyalty to the Islamic State (IS) group in 2014.

Andy Murray spotted struggling during Friday's practice
I thought past year was more hard because in two weeks we didn't finish one practice on our own terms. Murray has played in one tournament since losing to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open semifinals.

At least 17 soldiers were killed, according to an official tally.

The attacks have prompted army chief-turned-President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to declare a state of emergency in the country.

Egyptian security officials have raised the toll from a blitz attack by Islamic militants in Sinai to 23 soldiers killed and 33 wounded, making it one of the deadliest attacks in the volatile peninsula this year. It did not name the militants' suspected affiliation. Reports indicate that the military was forced to abandon the checkpoint, at least temporarily.

Separately on Friday, a homeland security officer was shot dead outside his home in Qalubiya, a province just north of Cairo, while on his way to Friday prayers, an Interior Ministry statement said.

NAN reports that on April 9, ISIS claimed responsibility for two bomb blasts that struck Coptic churches in Egypt, in which 47 people were killed on Palm Sunday.
