Tour de France team accuses Peter Sagan of 'an act of violence' after elbow incident

Sagan's 2017 Tour de France campaign is over' with an UCI official saying his actions "endangered several riders".

Sagan drifted into Cavendish's line, and appeared to have his elbow out as he bumped into Cavendish, but Cavendish may have made contact first, forcing Sagan to throw out his elbow to balance his bike.

And here's a few more looks, just in case you're wondering if that elbow is intentional or not.

Nonetheless, Sagan was disqualified from the Tour de France for the incident.

Briton Thomas, who had warned on Monday that he just wanted to stay clear of trouble, hit the deck for the second time in three stages. The Slovakian rider is one of the sport's biggest stars.

When he left for hospital, he was also wearing a sling.

VITTEL, France French champion Arnaud Demare claimed his maiden Tour de France stage win when he powered to victory in a crash-marred finale on the fourth day on Tuesday after a 207.5-km ride from Mondorf-les-Bains in Luxembourg.

"We have chose to disqualify Peter Sagan from the 2017 Tour de France after the tumultuous sprint here in Vittel, where he endangered several riders, including Mark Cavendish and others who were involved in the crash", race jury president Philippe Marien of the UCI said.

"We apply article 12.104 of the International Cycling Union regulations which allow us to disqualify a rider". "I will definitely need stitches in this finger, it's bleeding a lot". "With the shoulder, I'm not sure if I've done something to the ligament. I'm not a doctor, I don't know what, but from the feelings, I'm not 100 per cent".

"Mark Cavendish hurt his shoulder and hand".

American Nathan Brown, who was part of the day's breakaway, took enough points over the five climbs on the day to snatch the polkadot jersey for the king of the mountains from his teammate and compatriot Taylor Phinney.

Demare took the green jersey for the points classification and is now the favorite to take it to Paris, a feat Sagan was looking to achieve for a record-equalling sixth time.

"I get on with Peter well but I don't get it. Matthews nearly got me but I'm happy for the victory". "He just came to me and after to the fence".

Defending champion Froome was held up by Thomas' crash but did not go down.

Cavendish's head hit the ground hard, but after the stage he was back on his feet at his Dimension Data team bus - with Sagan there too, although there's no news yet on what words might have passed between them.

Sagan, who has since apologised to Cavendish, said: "Mark was coming pretty fast from the back".
