Uttar Pradesh Woman, Gang-Raped 9 Years Ago, Attacked With Acid For Fourth Time
In yet another horrifying incident, an acid attack victim in Aliganj district of Uttar Pradesh, whom chief minister Yogi Adityanath met in the hospital has again faced the same barbarous attack.
Inspector General of Police Jai Narayan Singh said other hostel inmates rushed to her rescue when they heard her crying.
The victim shouted for help but the attackers managed to make good their escape after perpetrating the crime, the police said. Women Welfare Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi had also visited the victim and assured all help for her.
"Ye ghatna sachmuch ghatna hai ya fir ghatna ke naam par kuchh log kewal badnaam karne ki sajish rach rahe hain (Did the attack really take place or are some people hatching a conspiracy to defame the State government)", he said.
The woman works at the Sheroes café run by acid attack survivors and is from Rae Bareli where her husband lives with their two daughters. "She was outside her hostel when someone came and threw acid on her".
The incident took place less than three months after the suspected rapists allegedly forced her to drink acid on train while she was travelling from her hometown, Rae Bareli, to Lucknow because she refused to withdraw her complaints against them. The victim had lodged a written complaint in this connection with the police then. Adityanath had visited her at a hospital and announced Rs 1 lakh assistance for the 45-year-old woman. After the previous incidents, two gunners were appointed for her.
The latest attack on her ignited widespread condemnation, with critics blaming the Adityanath government for what they said was a virtual breakdown of law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
According to government figures, there are hundreds of such attacks involving acid each year in India, although campaigners say the real figures are much higher. The woman is in trauma. "But the FIR will have to be filed by the family, whom we have informed about the incident", he said.
He also said the law is meant to protect but if someone misuses it, action would be taken against them.
Juhi questioned the state's road map and the minister-in-charge of the law and order about the miscreants not being arrested.
