After the USA downed a Syrian jet making a bombing run on US-backed forces fighting ISIS, Russia threatened to target U.S. and US-led coalition planes West of the Euphrates river in Syria.
The offensive is being waged by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias backed by the US-led coalition against ISIS. Everyday they are taking parts of the city.
The SDF began its drive against Raqqa - the last IS stronghold inside Syria - in early June after a monthslong campaign to encircle ISIS fighters inside the city.

In 2014, a Kurdish fighter named Rehana went viral after a tweet claimed that she had killed more than 100 ISIS terrorists. Syrian rebels allied with the US, Jordan, Turkey and others, are also vying for control in northern and southern Syria. The U.S.is now relying on these forces to retake ISIS's capital of Raqqa. Pro-Assad forces backed by Russian Federation and Iran also have a presence in the area, close to where Syria's borders converge with those of Jordan and Iraq.

Turkish defense officials said in a statement that Isik reiterated Turkey's concerns to Mattis.

A spokesman for the US mission to defeat IS said on Twitter the SDF had this week cleared almost 20 square kilometers of territory once held by IS jihadists, and that the SDF "now control all high-speed avenues of approach" into Raqqa.
