Trump to meet with tech execs on drones, universal broadband

24 June 2017, 01:02 | Maryann Sutton

Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, made some of his first public remarks since joining the administration when he spoke Monday at an event for the American Technology Council.

U.S. President Donald Trump participates in an American Technology Council roundtable, accompanied by Tim Cook, CEO of Apple (L) and Satya Nadella CEO of Microsoft Corporation.

Kushner and Greenblatt helped orchestrate Trump's May 22-23 visit to Jerusalem, where he met with Netayahu, and to Bethlehem in the West Bank, where he met with Abbas. Leaders at Apple and Google were among the American corporate executives who appealed to the president to stay in the pact.

The Council, which was constituted under an executive order signed on May 1, aims at orienting the President and the federal government's use of technology policies and strategies. During his meetings with the aforementioned tech leaders, the president reportedly called upon them to ask for the industry's help in improving federal technology usage.

The meetings are expected to continue as the White House celebrates its tech meet.

That changed yesterday, when Kushner spoke to the first meeting of the newly created American Technology Council, part of Trump's Office American Innovation, which is meant to nudge government into operating more like the business world.

The visits to Jerusalem and Ramallah by Kushner, a senior adviser to Trump, and national security aide Jason Greenblatt were widely reported on Sunday night, all citing unnamed White House officials.

A report by the US Government Accountability Office in 2016 found that the government spends more than $80 billion on IT every year, but that "federal legacy IT investments are becoming increasingly obsolete". Apple CEO Tim Cook threw a fundraiser for Trump's former opponent Hillary Clinton previous year.

Following the meeting, as well, Trump said that the government had to "catch up" with the private sector in everything from better services for citizens to stronger defense from cyber attacks.

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) is also attending the meeting.

"Bezos added: "[We must] continue to work hard and figure out ways to retrain and upskill workers all over the USA". The summit will kick off the White House's Technology Week, during which time it will pay special attention to technology issues. Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord was also widely criticized by tech executives, with some withdrawing from advisory positions as a result.
