Wonder Woman breaks box office record for female-directed films

"Wonder Woman" is officially the first female-led superhero blockbuster.

The Warner Bros/DC film, which stars Gal Gadot, earned a global opening weekend total of $223m (£173m), with $100.5m of that figure coming from the US.

Official synopsis: Wonder Woman hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. "Wonder Woman" also broke the record for the most successful opening weekend for a movie directed by a woman. Patty Jenkins's only other big-screen credit is Monster, a 2003 crime drama that garnered an Academy Award for lead actress Charlize Theron. The previous record holder, "Fifty Shades of Grey", brought in $85.2 million in 2015.

The well-reviewed movie (93% positive rating on critic site Rotten Tomatoes) drew a fairly split audience, with 52% female and 48% male. But she has said where she wants to take the next movie.

"Kong: Skull Island", another Warner Bros. feature that opened in March, has grossed $565 million, according to Box Office Mojo, including a strong showing in China. While Wonder Woman didn't match the box-office might of Batman v. Superman (a $166 million opening) or Suicide Squad ($133.7 million), it was much better received than those roundly derided releases.

Sills described the fugitives as violent repeat offenders and extremely unsafe , having taken the guards' 9 mm pistols. Monica had been with the Georgia Department of Corrections since October 2009 and Billue since July 2007.

Wonder Woman is about to land in the dark rooms of France and is already thinking about his next fighting. That total was also almost matched by the other ten Asian markets, where the film combined for $34.1 million and swept the No. 1 spots.

In fourth was another Disney production, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", at $9.7 million.

Internationally, the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie picked up another $73.8 million (GBP57 million) to take its tally past $500 million (GBP389 million).

That should put to rest the Fox News commentators who opine that Wonder Woman isn't "American enough". And this in a summer season that was down 9% from past year going into this weekend.
