Sphero Storytelling Spider-Man Toy

18 June 2017, 01:45 | Nina Hammond

High-tech toy maker Sphero won nerd hearts everywhere when it debuted a tiny, robotic BB-8 around the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The company is now unveiling its first non-spherical product. Technologically it was impressive, but that was eventually overshadowed by controversy after security researchers found the toy was using vulnerable encryption to send conversations with children to the cloud for processing.

It's not really a toy in the traditional sense. We've seen this idea realized in the company's BB-8 and Lightning McQueen toys, both of which were created to accompany Disney movies.

The toy itself is unique because it guides kids through comic book storylines, as if Spider-Man were a camp counselor at a bonfire. Over on Twitter, a fan asked whether alternate Spider-Man costumes will be available in the game, to which the studio gave a short but sweet "yes".

Everything the toy can do is definitely geared towards kids, however.

The interactive Spider-Man comes with this charging base. And the adventures all tend to play out the same way: listen, respond, listen, respond, etc.

Turkish president slams US charges for guards
The Turkish foreign ministry officially "invited" the United States ambassador in for discussions after the announcement. He was seen on video punching a protester and then kicking him twice as he was lying defenceless on the ground.

Built with fully animated LCD eyes and motion detection, Spider-Man is as expressive as he is perceptive. Remember how excited everyone was when the latest movie version of Spider-Man could squint his eyes? That adds up quickly.

Generally, Spider-Man doesn't look or act as impressive robotics-wise as Sphero's prior releases, but it still pushes the toy market forward with voice controls and a more interactive experience. And no one knows that better than the developers of the upcoming Spider-Man video game, who have been entrusted not to screw up Marvel's most sacred superhero icon. And Spider-Man has many tales to tell.

Right behind the character's light-up eyes, there's an Android device, and all you have to do to turn the "premium rubber" doll into a talking and listening companion is click the spider on his chest.

All this interaction and engagement might make you nervous, but Sphero spent a lot of time thinking about privacy.
