No longer out of bounds: Trump allies question Mueller probe
18 June 2017, 01:47 | Katrina Lee
All this idea appears to come from Trump close allies, including strategist Steve Bannon, who is anxious and frustrated with the prospect of a long probe.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, weighing in Tuesday morning, advised the White House and Trump to let the special counsel's investigation continue, and await vindication. "With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment".
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosensteintold members of a Senate appropriations subcommittee that he is the only person who is able to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and that he has seen no reason to do so.
Rosensteinsaid that because Attorney General Jeff Sessionsrecused himself from the Russian Federation matter, Mueller could only be fired by Rosenstein himself.
Mueller is leading the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and potential ties between Moscow and Trump's presidential campaign.
"I mean Robert Mueller, there's some real conflicts", he explained.
Rosenstein, who has been on the job for six weeks, said only he could fire Mueller, and only if he found good cause to do so.
"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel".
Mueller was interviewed by the Justice Department and by the president for the director's position, according to a senior White House official. A longtime friend, Christopher Ruddy, surfaced the president's thinking in a television interview Monday night, setting off a frenzied day of speculation that he would go through with it. However, Ruddy also emphasized that he did not think the president would be wise in dismissing Mueller, especially since there has been a lot of negative buzz in the media regarding the lack of justification from Trump when he fired former FBI Director James Comey.

Mueller has always been widely respected by many in Washington from both sides of the aisle, with many lawmakers praising Deputy Rob Rosenstein's appointment of the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.
"I said that the President was indeed considering that".
Trump advocate Newt Gingrich urged the president to "rethink" Mr Mueller's position.
He told senators during a committee hearing that there would have to be "good cause" for Mueller to be removed from his role.
The Department of Justice appointed Robert Mueller to take over the Russian Federation investigation in May after the firing of FBI Director James Comey.
Ruddy appears to have based his assessment on public comments made over the weekend by a member of Trump's personal legal team.
Gingrich added that Trump is "actually pretty confident" in the investigation and "ultimately, he's still going to be president and this stuff is all going to go away".
That includes the man who hired the special counsel and would have to do the firing.
