Oregon Becomes First State to Issue Gender Non-Binary ID Cards

Oregon 1st to allow non-binary gender option on IDs
Starting next month, the Oregon DMV will offer identity cards with a third gender marker.
OR just became the first state in the U.S.to offer a gender-neutral option on driver's licenses and IDs, a huge win for individuals in the state who do not identify as male or female.
Gender non-binary residents will soon be able to select "X" for non-specified gender when they apply for their identification cards.
While Oregon is the first state in the U.S.to recognize non-binary residents on IDs, this idea isn't new, according to Julie Rodriquez, communications manager of Basic Rights Oregon.
"Secondly, the bill advances a falsehood: that being male or female, or no gender at all is a choice each person must make, not a fact to celebrate and accept. Laws like this will simply erase any meaningful gender definitions, if being male or female is completely divorced from biological facts".
According to The Guardian, "The IDs can also help people avoid discrimination and mistreatment given that when people have IDs that don't match their gender presentation, they can be questioned and denied services".

Australia and New Zealand already have the option to choose an "X" gender on passports, and in India the options include "male", "female" and "eunuch".
The stats show that the number of people who don't consider themselves part of the gender binary is increasing. "It's something we should do because it's the right thing to do".
"I'm incredibly thrilled to be an Oregonian right now", said Gibbons, who identifies as non-binary.
"It's exciting to see Oregon's Department of Motor Vehicles adopt this change", she said in a press release". California would be the first state to establish a third gender option through legislation. As part of the DMV's rule adjustment process, the division held public hearings to gauge the public's view on the change. Judge Amy Holmes Hen ruled that "The sex of Jamie Shupe is hereby changed from female to non-binary". The American Medical Association's House of Delegates passed a resolution just this week calling for improved public education about the "medical spectrum of gender identity", necessary because gender is "incompletely understood as a binary selection".
The ruling, which is believed to be the first of its kind, allowed Portland resident Jamie Shupe to mark that designation in a standard petition for change of sex.
