The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm's center was about 40 miles (70 kilometers) west-southwest of Salina Cruz late Monday, and it was moving northwest at 5 mph (7 kph). NASA's Aqua satellite captured a look at the depression just prior to its classification as a tropical storm. The threat of flash flooding and mudslides is likely to persist in southern Mexico even after the system has dissipated.

The U.S. won't see any direct impacts from this storm. It had maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour (45 kph) 40 miles per hour (65 kph) and additional weakening was expected as it moves across land.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Mexico's Pacific coast between Punta Maldonado and Boca de Pijijiapan.

The National Hurricane Center noted that "Calvin is expected to cause flash floods and mudslides in the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz through midweek".
