On stage at Microsoft's E3 press briefing, Mojang unveiled their new look for the insanely popular Minecraft.
"Going forward, the edition you'll find on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, mobile and VR will simply be known as 'Minecraft', a separate entity from 'Minecraft: Java Edition', which is the original PC game". We've reached out to Sony for comment, and until we hear from them officially, we should give them the benefit of the doubt.
Since Microsoft purchased Minecraft in 2014, many had wondered how the Xbox creator might handle the game on other consoles. You'll now be able to play Minecraft across different systems, including Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, meaning that yes, a Super Mario and Banjo skin can now come into contact with each other!
Naturally, the update will come with cross-platform support, but will also bring better graphics so there's little disparity across multiple platforms.
It'll happen later this summer as part of Minecraft's next major update, playfully dubbed "Better Together".
Minecraft is available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Windows 10, Apple iOS devices, and Android devices. The update will also players to finally enjoy their world building in 4K and makes the game's pixelated palette pretty - well, prettier.
The Bedrock shift means console players will see another significant change: infinite worlds. Meanwhile, users will be receiving a free update in near future which will bring changes to their devices. "That's nothing new for us, in terms of working with developers and publishers to allow cross-platform play between PC and PS4", said Sony Worldwide Studios' Shuhei Yoshida to Eurogamer at the time. The company says it plans to launch with four servers right away, including Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP, and CubeCraft, with more expected to be added at a later date.
"Minecraft will get 4K HDR graphics which include improved lighting, shadows, water effects. basically, it'll be like giving your eyes a luxury massage", Stone explained.
As Ars highlights, Microsoft also revealed that it planned to unify all versions of the game across all platforms using the Xbox Live service.
