Nick Hostetler, the Sox director of amateur scouting, said Burger was on a list of five players the Sox were targeting with their pick.
Burger, who played for the United States national collegiate team following the 2016 season, joined Vanderbilt's Jeren Kendall and Virginia's Pavin Smith and Adam Haseley as the top collegiate position players leading up to the draft.
Yesterday, Jake Burger was in tears after his Missouri State Bears were eliminated by TCU in the NCAA Super Regionals.
"Just as we felt that Zack past year was going to catch, we feel Jake's going to stay at third base", Hostetler said.
On defense, Hostetler said they expect Burger to be able to stick at third base rather than move to first. "He's got a plus arm, a 55-60 arm on a scouting 20 to 80 scale".
Burger was a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award and ranked second among active Division I hitters with 47 career home runs.
Hostetler described Burger as a high-energy, fun person who is an "exceptional leader". He said Burger should be able to handle an assignment to Class-A Kannapolis, though he might start in rookie ball to become acclimated. His selection also extends an impressive string of talent production that has resulted in at least one Bear being picked in 31 of the last 32 MLB Drafts dating back to 1986.
The first of 40 rounds of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft began Monday at 6 p.m. He piggybacked off that season as a sophomore when he hit.349 and parked 21 homers in 56 games.
