Connecticut House Approves Commercial Casino Proposal

Connecticut House Greenlights Gambling Expansion Legislative Package

The proposal for the construction of a commercial casino in the northern part of the state first emerged back in 2015.

"I think our focus should be on saving those jobs in Eastern Connecticut and allowing two tribes that have been good partners as along as the town that it's going to be agree with it", Rep. Themis Klarides said during an interview Monday.

Her comments could help to put expanded casino gambling over the goal line in a legislative session that's been dominated by a loud and expensive lobbying battle between MMCT, the group that consists of the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes that already have casinos and MGM which has been fighting to open a casino in Bridgeport.

MGM Resorts International expressed disappointment Wednesday in CT lawmakers' passage of a bill that would allow the state's two federally recognized tribes to open a gaming establishment near the MA border in East Windsor.

Despite the House has already given its approval to the gambling expansion in the state, some CT lawmakers still expressed their concern with the fact that the tribes will be given the exclusive right to develop a new casino on what is described as non-tribal land.

Hartford, Conn. (WTNH) - State lawmakers have given the final green light for a third casino.

Canadian foreign minister says Trump's America can't be trusted for 'global leadership'
First, Freeland said, Canada should "robustly support the rules-based global order". Then, pausing, she said, "I would like to profoundly thank our American friends".

Eventually, the need for additional revenue sources and the gloomy possibility of over 9,000 people employed at Connecticut's existing casinos to lose their jobs prevailed in the House.

The bill previously passed the state Senate and now heads to Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy's desk.

According to Aresimowicz, this new bill would allow Sportech Venues to have eight more off-track betting licenses, for a total of 24 possible locations throughout the state.

He says lawmakers are still negotiating an alternative gambling-related bill. Both the Mohegans and the Mashantucket Pequots have been paying the same 25% on slot machine revenue from their existing casinos, under a 1990 compact with the state.

The state of CT takes another major step forward in building a casino between Hartford and Springfield to compete with MGM.

Although the casino proposal has gained the necessary legislative support, its trials are far from over. Some legislators supported the tribes' proposal in an effort to protect jobs at their southeastern CT casinos and other lawmakers wanted to create an open casino bidding process that could lead to other casino developers possibly building gambling facilities elsewhere in CT.
