Microsoft reveals Dell and Asus Windows Mixed Reality headsets

Peter Han VP Partner Devices and Solutions at Microsoft shows the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro publicly for the first time during Microsoft’s Computex 2017 keynote

We've known since last year's Computex that Microsoft is working on mixed reality (MR) devices and has been over the year joined hands with HP, Acer, Dell, Asus, and Lenovo for headsets. Han highlighted a diverse mix of Windows 10 devices that take advantage of new capabilities such as enhanced inking, built-in game broadcasting, and advanced security all captured in attractive hardware designs. The Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition is available for US$299, while the HP Windows Mixed Realty Developer Edition is available for $329.

Only Dell and Asus had headsets ready to show off at Computex, but Microsoft has said that Lenovo's device will be "incredibly affordable" and will launch this year, with others from Acer, HP, and Dell following suit.

The tech giant also outlined key areas of focus to engage customers, increase momentum in the PC market with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and create new categories powered by Windows Mixed Reality.

At one point between the first and second innings, five consecutive hitters either popped out or struck out against Asher. Asher said his shaky effort versus the Astros gave him some motivation for this start, and that certainly paid off.

The headset is created to be powerful, HMD fast and very light with a six-degrees-of-freedom tracked motion controller. Microsoft doesn't mention whether Asus' headset will be available later this year, so it's possible it might not arrive until 2018. Mixed reality has to catch up with VR when it comes to consumer awareness and Dell plans on doing that with its new stylish white headset which is designed by the same team that makes their premium XPS and Alienware PCs. The headset features cable routing, replaceable cushions and a halo-style headband with flip-up visor.

Lenovo's headset promises an immersive, affordable experience with built in sensors for tracking. Peter Han also introduced a new operational capability that enables partners to dynamically include Windows Store content to any Windows 10 PC they ship at any time in the manufacturing and resale process, introducing new supply chain agility for the PC ecosystem.

Consumers may buy these headsets expecting to use their existing computers and think they can play the best VR games, which would be possible only with a powerful computer system, Harding-Rolls pointed out.
