Indy Drivers Robbed at Gunpoint at Taco Bell Drive-Thru
Sunday's race was won by Takuma Sato, who became the first Japanese driver to win the Indianapolis 500.
After claiming the pole for the 2017 Indianapolis 500, Scott Dixon ended up not being able to finish the race after getting involved in a crash with Jay Howard.
The impact didn't cause the destruction, that came from Dixon's auto pinwheeling horizontally across the inner retaining wall.
In a separate incident, Dixon was lucky to walk away from a spectacular, flying crash on turn two of lap 54, where he was near the front of the field and hunting down the lead after starting on pole. Howard was not hurt.
"I'm fine. I'm really glad Scott's OK as he was a victim of this", said Howard, who was also checked and released from the care center. I thought we deserved to finish the race and experience the end.
The race was red flagged on Lap 55 to allow safety teams to clean up a significant amount of debris from both cars, as well as to fix safety fencing on the inside of the track.
Here's another video from the incident right as Dixon's auto went flying in the air before the camera cut off.

I'd already picked that way to go and there was nowhere else to go. "I'm just bummed for the team, man". ". I think when you make those decisions, which way to go with the auto, you're hoping Jay there is going to stay up against the wall. You just hold on and have faith in the safety advances that we've had over the years". It was definitely a wild ride, for sure, and big thanks to everybody [who helped] and the safety standards we have right now. The tub of his vehicle collapsed and Bourdais was left with a fractured pelvis, hip and ribs.
Dixon was among the heavy favorites to win his second Indianapolis 500 this weekend. "Just a wild ride".
