No homes are now under mandatory evacuation but some people have left voluntarily, Margaret Stewart with the Los Angeles Fire Department tells KPCC.

Logistical equipment that had been assigned to an earlier fire in Lake View Terrace - which was burning into the Angeles National Forest - was redirected to a fire station in Van Nuys after the Brentwood fire broke out.

That fire was mostly in a remote area, burning primarily in the Angeles National Forest. That fire is 20 percent contained and resources are being diverted from there to the Brentwood blaze. Investigators say the fire is considered suspicious at this time because of its location.

A volcano-like smoke plume was visible across the Westside and San Fernando Valley, as the fire consumed moderate to thick brush in an area just off Mandeville Canyon Road, a dead end thoroughfare that snakes up a deep canyon, lined by expensive view houses.

Because of a lack of brush, "the fire ran out of fuel, so it stopped", she said.

Around 6 p.m., multiple fire departments responded to initial reports of a fire at auto salvage yard C and S near Smitty Way at Tara Springs Road.

Authorities have confirmed the fire started from sparks from a weed-trimmer.

3-4 acres of brush were found burning near a house on the block around 12:45 p.m., according to City News Service.

Incidentally, Stewart said that the brush clearance efforts around the homes in Mandeville Canyon may have protected that community from the flames. Crews were sent to turn it off.
