Horschel defeats Day in playoff at Byron Nelson

Spieth out at Nelson Kokrak has career-best 62 leads by 5

He just missed a miraculous eagle at the 18th hole that would have gotten him in the playoff with his playing partners. You know, prepping for (today) I feel like is so hard.

With four straight missed cuts entering the AT&T Byron Nelson, no one thought Billy Horschel would get the job done in Dallas.

For Horschel it was the fourth PGA title win of his career and he was delighted to overcome several bouts of nerves to take the victory. To have won as many majors on this tour as he has is outstanding, obviously, and a thrill for me.

It ended with a whimper with Day's three-jack on the 18th green in playoff hole No. 1, and despite being excited about the win, Horschel didn't love how the tournament ended. Sleeping on the lead, you can overthink it and I just like to go home with my wife, our two-year-old daughter, watch some cartoons.

It's his first PGA TOUR victory since 2014.

Having said that, he's still building out here on the PGA Tour and it may take another season or two to find the consistency that's been eluding him.

Thompson was 20 under in breaking the tournament record for best total score in relation to par, topping Annika Soranstam's 19 under in 2008. Day charged up the leaderboard on Saturday with a spectacular 63 to get himself into the final group on Sunday, which was also a group of three thanks to the weather.

Day's only bogey came when he blasted out of greenside bunker at the 14th, then pushed his 4-foot par chance just left of the hole and 2 1/2 feet past.

Quiros had a seven-stroke lead at one point but four bogeys and a double bogey let Lombard force extra holes with both finishing at 14-under- one stroke ahead of third-placed finisher Li Haotong of China.

Thompson is playing her third event since losing the ANA Inspiration in a playoff after being penalized four strokes for a rules violation that a TV viewer reported.

Five players, including Scott Brown (65), Scott Piercy (66), Grayson Murray (68), Chad Campbell (68) and Byeong Hun An of South Korea (69), are at 203 and within striking distance.

The long-hitting Florida player Thompson had three birdies and a bogey - on the par-3 17th - to reach 14-under 199 on Kingsmill's River Course. Television: Friday, 4-7 p.m. ET (Golf Channel); Saturday-Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m. (Golf Channel); 3-6 p.m. (CBS Sports).
