The South Korean manufacturer will showcase its 9.1-inch stretchableOLED panel at the Society for Information DisplayConference taking place in the USA on Tuesday. SID is an worldwide event for the electronic display industry, which will run from May 23 to 25 in Los Angeles.
According to Korean media outlets, which first reported the news, the stretchabledisplay was "the most advanced flexibledisplay" to date.
Samsung is said to have created the balloon of displays as, when dented, the screen will instantly revert back to its original shape.
Samsung will reportedly show off a 9.1-inch stretchableOLED display at the SID 2017. However, sources are speculating that Samsung could be applying this to various devices including wearables, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and even automobile display. While consumers are yet to see rollable or flexibledisplays on smartphones, in a lab sense, they have been around for some time.
One Samsung Display spokesperson described the several properties of this stretchableOLED panel (via Korea Herald).
Samsung will showcase this display on Tuesday; the 9.1 inch display has the tendency to bend up to 12mm in both the directions without affecting the resolution. According to the same report from The Korea Herald, Samsung will also be bringing a glassless 3D OLED display and a new UHD LCD display.
Thebendable OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen which can stretch in both direction by as much as 12 millimetres might spell out a new era in phone screen technology.
"FlexibleOLED production yield has improved dramatically over the last few years, which could prompt panel manufacturers to ramp up flexible OLED production lines". This makes the material ideal in the development and commercialization of flexibledisplays for the future.
