Tillerson Unconcerned About Independence After Comey Firing
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson denied reports that President Trump had divulged classified national intelligence when he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last week.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Wednesday, April 12, 2017 that relations with Moscow are at a low point after meetings in Russian Federation that seemed to do little to bridge a deepening diplomatic divide over a chemical attack in Syria. I understand what his objectives are.
The top USA diplomat spoke before Donald Trump leaves on May 19 for his first overseas trip as president, and days after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election campaign.
"I think it's been well documented - it's pretty well understood, the nature of that interference, here and elsewhere", he said.
Tillerson acknowledged that sour relations between Russian Federation and the US are "not healthy for the world" or for USA national security, but he was sober in his assessment of the future.
"And so the values guide our policy, but if we put our values in the front of our policies and say, 'This is our policy, ' we have no room to adapt to changing circumstances to achieve our ultimate objective", the secretary of State said.
"So the president, I think, is committed to at least make an effort in that regard", he said, "and he has certainly asked me to make an important effort as well".
However, "it's inconclusive as to what, if any, effect it had", he added.
Tillerson said he's unconcerned about speculation (from moonbats like Todd) that he may not be able to remain independent from Trump if he had to take a stance that undermined the president.
In the aftermath of President Donald Trump firing FBI Director James Comey, the White House made staff rather scarce when it came to the Sunday shows this morning, with most of the programs having nobody from the administration on to give the president's side of the situation. "I can't really answer that".
"Well, I will never compromise my own values, Chuck", Tillerson said.
Trump is "listening to input from all interested parties in the region and understanding, in the context of a peace initiative, what impact would such a move have", he said.
