During the current school year, students and teachers were out of school over Christmas break from December 16 through January 1, for a total of 17 days.

Casey and Hoffman will serve three year, unpaid, terms starting July 1.

The school board vote on the budget has been scheduled for the May 22 meeting.

The newly approved budget calls for a tax levy, (the total amount requested from all the tax payers in the district) of $118.53 million, a 2.1 percent increase from last year's.

Extending the bus route, if approved, would cost about $68,000 and would be paid for in the coming year out of the fund balance.

According to the New York State School Boards Association, the average proposed school district tax levy increase in will be 1.48 percent, well below the 2 percent property tax cap. The budget increases year-over-year spending by $541,140, up 2.54 percent. School officials said 63 affidavit votes would be verified on Wednesday and a victor would be declared. Marcus received 992 votes, while Bresnihan garnered 966. The district is estimating that this would result in an annual property tax increase of $53.26 for a home valued at $200,000.

Newcomer Cassie Miller-Kristel was elected to the school board, defeating incumbent Kevin Capobianco, 192-111.

"I am certainly not happy with the 1.89 percent tax increase", Pfender said.

Morris' budget passed 116-43, with the capital reserve 108-48 in favor and the library passing 90-69.

Massive creature washes up on Indonesia's Serum Island - but what is it?
The creature appeared just off Indonesia's Maluku province - some fishermen were convinced it was the remains of a giant squid. Weighing two tonnes and measuring nearly 7m in length, locals speculated the creature was some sort of undiscovered dugong.

At the meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Finance John Brucato also gave a presentation to review the budget of approximately $160.7 million.

It takes just a few minutes to vote, the polling places are close by, and districts offer at least seven hours in which to cast ballots.

During a candidate forum last month patrons expressed lingering concerns over board accountability after the district fell short $15 million due to miscalculations when it passed a $37 million bond issue to build new schools and renovate others. Mauger tallied 541 votes as Jasen garnered 442.

Bridgehampton's $14.36 million budget sailed through with 102 voting for it and 74 voting no.

Voters also approved establishing a capital reserve fund, with 588 voters supporting the measure and 135 opposed.

Although the K-8 school tax rate will drop from $1.184 to $1.162 per $100 of assessed valuation for 2017-18, that decrease does not mean every Howell homeowner will pay less in school taxes. Also when looking at vacation days during the second semester next year, students will get back the President's Day holiday on February 19, as well as an additional day over Easter (March 29-April 2) for a total of five days off for the holiday. Voters approved the budget, with 131 voting in favor and 29 voting against.

Bedden will leave the school system on June 30, 2017. It restricts school districts and municipalities to 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.

Worcester's budget and bus propsitions passed, 146-39 and 144-40, with the school board going to Tanya Shalor over Justin Frost 124-55.

Proposition 2, to purchase four 66-passenger buses at a maximum cost of $474,612, - 75.2 percent paid for by NY state - passed, 676-261. Spending would increase by 1.62 percent.
