Top baby names of 2016
14 May 2017, 02:40 | Katrina Lee
The Social Security Administration has released the data on what Americans named their babies in 2016, and at the top, it looks nearly exactly the same as a year ago.
Caitlyn is no longer one of the most popular baby names.
It's the fourth consecutive year Noah has claimed the top spot for boys.
The rest of the top 10 for girls, in order: Olivia, Ava, Sophia, Isabella, Mia, Charlotte, Abigail, Emily and Harper. All variations fell out of the list of most popular 1,000 names. In general, she said, parents don't want to give their children names that might attract controversy.
The most popular name in a given year would receive the rank of "1".
Hillary Clinton, the first woman to be the presidential nominee of a major American political party, did not lead to a spike in baby names, either.
The second biggest jumps were for the names Royalty (for girls) and Creed (for boys), with pop culture playing a big role in overall baby name popularity.
The 2016 election didn't seem to have an impact on the list: There were no major changes in rankings of the names Donald or Hillary. As a result, today's top names aren't almost as popular as the top names from 50 years ago.
For girls, it was Kehlani, which jumped to No. 872 from 3,359. Kehlani is a singer, songwriter and dancer who has collaborated with Chance the Rapper and Zayn.
The force was strong for Kylo in 2016 as he soared 2,368 spots for the boys, from number 3,269 in 2015 to number 901.
The rise of Harry by 101 places to 679 may have something to do with Zayn's former bandmate Harry Styles, but could also have something to do with a resurgence of older, traditional names, some of which are back in the top 1000 after having disappeared for a while, including Ralph (now at 992), Alistair (at 882), and Howard (at 900).
