A local found this giant sea creature washed ashore on Indonesia's Serum Island on Tuesday night

As per Mashable, a local military command is keeping watch on the carcass, while residents have asked authorities to help remove the remains so it doesn't contaminate the surrounding area.

The unusual finding attracted scores of residents to Hulung Beach at Iha village in West Seram district.

Mysterious sightings have also been seen near New Zealand.

Videos of the enormous creature have found their way to YouTube.

An analysis of the images concluded that the find was actually the remains of a basking shark.

While social media thinks it's a giant squid or a humpback whale, it is unclear as to what kind of animal it may be.

The creature appeared just off Indonesia's Maluku province - some fishermen were convinced it was the remains of a giant squid.

Further $900m needed for Somalia crisis response
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni is pictured arriving at the London Somalia Conference at Lancaster House in London on Thursday. They spoke at a high-level conference to address the Horn of Africa nation's deepening humanitarian and security crisis.

The massive pile of decomposing flesh measures nearly 50 feet long and has washed up onto the shore. As much as the ocean can offer up creatures that seem like horrors to our earth-bound sensibilities, in this case the horror is the reality of death and decay, the inevitable end of us all.

"Spoilers: It's a rotten whale carcass", tweeted Andrew Thaler.

HuffPost has reached out to several marine experts for their take.

"According to a characteristic of the skin, it is a rare species", said Kim. "Most likely, the animal was brought by the warm current". "It's unusual. Dolphins do not have any fur".

People are trying to identify a mysterious sea creature, but this time it's a long, long way from Scotland's Loch Ness.

Weighing two tonnes and measuring nearly 7m in length, locals speculated the creature was some sort of undiscovered dugong.
