Sharks Spotted Along Southern California Coast, Including 15 at San Onofre Beach; Advisories Issued in Long Beach, Orange County
Sky 2 spotted several sharks swimming off Long Beach's coast Thursday morning.
Even if adult white sharks swim near the shore - which they do from time to time - they're not particularly interested in humans. Their fins rose menacingly from the water as they glided back and forth.
The announcement warned swimmers and surfers to calmly exit the water Wednesday afternoon.
"Please be advised this area is heavily populated at the moment with large great white sharks, some of which are in the surf line". That scenario only happens if a shark is acting aggressive or is longer than 8 feet.
The sharks are believed to be juvenile Great Whites, between five and six feet long.
Sightings are not uncommon along the coast, but attacks are rare. Also, as temperatures climb more people are drawn to the ocean. The beach is nearby the area now under the shark advisory. Employees are heard discussing the sharks and the locations of people in the water. But California State Parks developed a shark advisory system, which involves the placement of signs along the water's edge.
The OCSD sighting is only one of the many reported sightings of great whites in California.
