Income tax commissioner, five others arrested by CBI in Mumbai
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested city-based Income Tax commissioner (Appeal-30) BB Rajendra Prasad and five others for allegedly engineering and pocketing a bribe of Rs two crore for a favourable tax order.
Prasad, a 1992 batch Indian Revenue Service officer who is now in charge of appeals in Mumbai, was arrested from his house in Visakhapatnam while he was on leave.
Prasad was caught red handed while receiving Rs 19.34 lakh from a real estate agent, Suresh Kumar Jain, in Visakhapatnam. While some reports put the seizure at Rs 1.5 crore, others said it was Rs 16 lakh.
Several property documents along with details of bank accounts, three lockers and other incriminating documents were also recovered during the searches.
The trust through the CA firm entered into a conspiracy of paying a hefty bribe running into crores as "illegal gratification" to secure the favourable order from Prasad.
According to Prasad's instructions, the money was to be delivered in Mumbai to Manish Jain (suspected to be the hawala operator), who would then transfer it to his relative Suresh Kumar Jain in Visakhapatnam.
