Mountain Lion Snatches Family Dog From Inside Bay Area Home
19 April 2017, 01:46 | Nina Hammond
Mountain lion may have taken dog from home
A mountain lion snatched a barking dog from the bedroom of a California homeowner as she and her child slept just feet away, authorities said.
But even in Pescadero, Zuno said, this sighting of an apparent mountain lion is rare. She then watched the animal grab her dog from its bed and leave, according to sheriff's office.
The woman told deputies she and a child were sleeping in a bedroom with their 15-pound Portuguese Podengo at the foot of the bed. "But I did think it was unusual, and then I saw the lion walk back out".
This bedroom has French doors that were partially left open to let their dog out.
In the middle of the night, the woman woke up to her dog barking aggressively.
The Sheriff's Office release identified the animal as a mountain lion, but Andrew Hughan, a spokesman for the Department of Fish and Wildlife, said at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday that a game warden was now at the scene and that the animal had not yet been identified.
She added she saw "wet, very clear, large paw prints" along the path to their home and spotted a few drops of blood by their door.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife were notified of the incident, the sheriff's office said. The mountain lion gained entry to the house via the back door which was cracked open. Mountain lions are very familiar in these parts.
Those residing in mountain lion territory are also warned to avoid attracting deer, mountain lion's main prey, keep brush trimmed to reduce places where they can hide; and consider installing motion detector lights around the house.
Authorities want to remind residents to lock and secure their home's doors and windows. "Because she plays with Leo a lot, and it didn't seem normal", Catalina said.
Detective Salvador Zuno, a spokesman for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, said the department and California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials have confirmed the animal was indeed a mountain lion based on paw prints found near the home in the rural coastal town.
