Pence warns North Korea 'era of strategic patience is over'

18 April 2017, 02:31 | Nina Hammond

Pence, kicking off a 10-day Asian tour in Seoul, spoke at a joint news conference with South Korean acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn one day after North Korea's latest failed missile test. Pence pointed to recent US military strikes in Syria and Afghanistan as proof of President Trump's resolve.

"We'll be conducting more missile tests on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis", Vice Foreign Minister Han Song-Ryol told the BBC. Syria's ambassador to North Korea denounces what he calls USA aggression and its "history of interventions" and says sending a "message" to North Korea with an attack on a Syrian airfield was irresponsible.

US Vice-President Mike Pence has said his country's "era of strategic patience" with North Korea is over.

"Just in the past two weeks, the world witnessed the strength and resolve of our new president in actions taken in Syria and Afghanistan", Mr Pence said.

Tensions in the region have been escalating ever since US President Donald Trump warned the hermit state not to carry out nuclear tests.

After visiting the DMZ, Pence is expected to hold talks with South Korea's Acting President Hwang Kyo-Ahn in Seoul.

The missile test came a day after the national celebration of the birth of Kim Il-Sung, the founder of North Korea and the grandfather of the country's current leader, Kim Jung-Un.

Kim went on to clarify that the approach to the Korean peninsula of a US aircraft carrier strike force, led by the nuclear powered USS Carl Vinson, would not be considered enough to constitute "the slightest movement".

The vice president earlier visited a military installation near the DMZ, Camp Bonifas, for a briefing with military leaders at the joint U.S.

US sends dozens of troops to Somalia, 1st time in decades
Campbell, Kentucky, arrived in Mogadishu on April 2 at the request of the Somali government, the US military official told VOA . This month marks 10 years since the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) started.

Pence declared that North Korea had tested the world's patience for two decades and "answered our overtures with wilful deception, broken promises and nuclear and missile tests".

In this file image made from video released by KRT on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, North Korea launches four missiles in an undisclosed location North Korea. He went on to say that any USA military action against North Korea would trigger an "all out war". South Korea reported that this year's Key Resolve and Foal Eagle drills included exercises focused on "incapacitating North Korean leadership".

While the era of strategic patience may be over, the Trump administration is clearly taking some kind of strategic steps.

It has denounced the United States deployment of an aircraft carrier group to the region, saying it would respond by "force of arms" to "reckless moves". But at the same time, McMaster said on "This Week" on ABC, "it's time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully". They also committed to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions and to increase cooperation to convince North Korea to abandon its illicit weapons program.

Kim watched Saturday's military parade, which featured an array of weapons that surprised those who've made it their business to know what the isolated communist land has up its sleeve. "We hope to achieve this objective through peaceable means". SUPREME COURT Trump's appointee Neil Gorsuch shows himself to be a frequent and energetic questioner during U.S. Supreme Court arguments in his first day hearing cases as a justice, at one point even apologizing for talking too much.

Any US action near the Korean Peninsula could provoke a devastating response.

The Trump administration is hoping that China will help rein in North Korea in exchange for other considerations.

"We have a wide array of tools at disposal for the president should he choose to use them", the official said.
