Russia's main search engine defeats Google in antitrust complaint

Arkady Volozh Yandex founder and CEO

The court approved the settlement agreement between the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) and Google in the Android case.

The deal with Russian Federation s anti-monopoly service (FAS) came after Yandex, the country s biggest search engine, complained Google had an unfair advantage by pre-loading its search engine on Android phones. Not only is the company being fined $7.8 million Dollars, but it has agreed to allow the pre-installation of third-party apps.

In September 2015, the watchdog held that Google Ireland Ltd. and Google Inc. abused their dominance on the Russian market of mobile applications by preinstalling applications on Android smartphones and therefore violated anti-monopoly law.

The deal also includes a fine of 439m rouble (£6.2m) for Google, first handed down in late 2016. Plus, "Google will be obliged not to restrict pre-installation of any competing search engines and applications".

The complainant party was Russian tech company Yandex, which accused Google of forcing smartphone makers to pre-install Google Play software on their devices.

Taiwan Bans Eating Cats and Dogs 15000 Years Later
Additionally, dog owners are now prohibited from walking their dogs while driving a auto or riding a motorcycle. During the 10-day festival, an estimated 15,000 cats and dogs are slaughtered and consumed each year.

It brings to an end a long-running battle between the U.S. firm and Russia's competition regulator, the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS).

Now the search giant has settled, agreeing to pay a $7.8 million fine as well as allowing phone manufacturers to choose any default search engine.

"Competition breeds innovation", Volozh writes. In a "few months", Google will have a home-screen search widget that will offer up any manner of search providers (yep, including Yandex) assuming they sign a commercial agreement for their inclusion in the query box. The Google search bar will be replaced with a Chrome widget and Russian search engines will be able to appear on the screen.

Google did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. Additionally, we have developed market-leading on-demand transportation services, navigation products, and other mobile applications for millions of consumers across the globe.
