Sources said that Angel Cordero Ortiz, 31, was arrested in connection with the case Friday night.

Vanessa Marcotte was 27 when she was found slain near her parents' home on August 8, 2016. A 2011 alum of Boston University, she grew up in nearby Leominster, Massachusetts. DA Early said an alert state trooper in Worcester saw a man and a auto that matched the Marcotte murder suspect's description, and did a cheek DNA swab test that eventually led to Ortiz's arrest.

Prosecutors have charged Colon-Ortiz with aggravated assault, aggravated assault and battery, and assault with the intent to rape. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored SUV parked in the area around the time of Marcotte's murder. Early said he anticipates a murder charge against Colon-Ortiz, who is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

Investigators found her body later that evening in a remote, wooded-area naked and partially burned. The DNA was used to help create a profile of a suspect, which was released two months ago.

The DA said that they have received more than 1,300 tips in the case, which has helped put together the suspect description.
