Senate GOP 'goes nuclear,' clearing way for Trump court pick
Charles Grassley said the nominee was "his own man".
Vice President Pence presided over the vote in his role as president of the Senate.
With his final vote set for Friday, Gorsuch counts 55 supporters: the 52 Republicans, along with three moderate Democrats from states that Trump won - Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Donnelly of Indiana. GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia did not vote.
The vote was 54-45 on Friday. "Congratulations to an exceptionally qualified and respected judge on his confirmation to the Supreme Court", Trump tweeted.
Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell then appealed the rule that 60 votes are necessary to bypass a filibuster.
Gorsuch was nominated by President Donald Trump to fill the vacancy left on the court by the February 2016 death of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia. Republicans vowed to not confirmed whomever Obama nominated and made good on that promise by not giving Garland even a single Senate hearing past year.
In a floor speech, Grassley lauded Gorsuch's dedication to the separations of powers in the US government. "His deep understanding of the separation of powers enlivens his opinions".
SC inmates charged in killings of 4 other prisoners
The facility receives, assesses and classifies every male inmate in the state who is sentenced to more than 91 days in prison. The South Carolina Department of Corrections says the four are John King , Jason Kelley , Jimmy Ham , and William Scruggs .
President Donald Trump says in a statement that Gorsuch's "judicial temperament, exceptional intellect, unparalleled integrity, and record of independence" will make him "the flawless choice" to serve on the court.
"Judge Gorsuch will be sworn in at the Rose Garden of the White House on Monday at 11:00 A.M. He will be a great Justice".
Republicans exulted in the victory.
"What a judge does as a Supreme Court justice and what he does as a circuit court judge are not necessarily the same thing", Loewy said. "He's going to make the American people proud", he said. "He's an exceptional choice", he said.
In fact, some believe Gorsuch may even be more conservative than Scalia was.
Gorsuch will be sworn in Monday and will quickly begin confronting cases of outcome, including one involving separation of church and state that the justices will take up in less than two weeks. And it was cause for celebration for conservatives, who have often seemed willing to forgive various Trump failings next to the chance to win this lifetime appointment to the most important court on the land. Many Democrats were still tight over Garland being passed over, as they should be, and noted that Gorsuch was super conservative. The move ends a largely partisan showdown with Democrats waging a lengthy filibuster during this week's confirmation battle over Neil Gorsuch and Republicans voting to change the Senate rules.
In the days leading up to Gorsuch's confirmation, Collins and Coons led bipartisan negotiations to try to head off the nuclear option, which changed the Senate rules over the objection of Democrats in the same way that in 2013 Democrats used the nuclear option to make it easier to confirm President Barack Obama's executive branch and lower-court nominees.
