Former Fox anchor: Harassment is pervasive

US Rep. Maxine Waters: Bill O'Reilly 'needs to go to jail'

Earlier on Wednesday, President Trump told the New York Times that O'Reilly was "a good person" and that he "shouldn't have settled" with his accusers.

Some of the companies that abandoned O'Reilly issued strongly worded statements that may be hard to explain if they return, said Angelo Carusone, president of the liberal watchdog Media Matters.

Smith said calling the hotline is a good idea "only if you think it would be good to call the KGB to complain about Putin". "Because you should have taken it all the way; I don't think Bill did anything wrong".

Bill O'Reilly, the host of Fox News' popular talkshow "The O'Reilly Factor", is on tenuous ground as a growing number of companies pull advertisements from his show.

Critics called for an advertiser boycott until O'Reilly was removed, and by Wednesday evening, over 30 advertisers publicly pulled ads from "The O'Reilly Factor".

O'Reilly hasn't admitted any wrongdoing and said he settled for the sake of his family. "They have treated women very badly, and so I understand that the Justice Department has opened a case and they're taking a look at them because this really is a sexual harassment enterprise", Waters said.

Last summer, former Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes resigned from the company after being accused of sexual misconduct by former network mainstay Gretchen Carlson.

US Congress makes move to repeal data privacy laws
Comcast and AT&T moved to reassure their customers Friday that they have not and will not collect and sell their personal data. Privacy experts are encouraging anxious web users to try using a virtual private network (VPN) as a kind of work-around.

Along with comedian Dennis Miller and Fox News host Jesse Watters, O'Reilly will discuss the current political climate when "The Spin Stops Here" tour visits Royal Farms Arena on September 22.

President Donald Trump has come to the defense of embattled Fox News host and conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly. One media buyer suggested marketers will have a hard time abandoning the program because of its strong, steady ratings performance.

According to ad-tracking firm iSpot.tv, Mercedes-Benz bought an estimated $266,477 of commercials on the show over the past 30 days, making the company the show's tenth largest advertiser, and spent $1.3 million in 2016.

But similar efforts to force Rush Limbaugh off the radio haven't worked.

The Jenny Craig defection shows how dire the situation has become for Fox News. "In my more than 20 years at Fox News Channel, no one has ever filed a complaint about me with the Human Resources Department, even on the anonymous hotline".

This time is different, and so will be the next time, as entities like Fox News and Bill O'Reilly are being exposed in the disinfecting sunlight.
