Only Wyoming is worse than Louisiana for women.

The nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy group says that if OH women made what men made, women would be able to afford almost two more years of food, more than 10 months of mortgage payments, 17 more months of rent, almost 21 more months of child care, or the entire cost of tuition and fees at a two-year community college.

Emma Porteus, of Leanin.org in San Francisco, hopes consumers see Tuesday's 20 percent discount as a big deal, and a wakeup call to the current gender pay gap.

The National Partnership for Women & Families reports the wage gap for African American women is even larger.

On being inspired by the good motives of this campaign, the shareholders are now pressurizing their companies on equal pay. Even when comparing the sexes with the same job title at the same company and using similar education and experience, the gap persists. It gives you hope that you can take care of your family. This pay gap penalizes women who work hard every day.

Mothers with full-time, year-round jobs are paid 70 cents for every dollar paid to fathers, the organization said. Florida is the only state in the South with a gender wage gap narrower than the national average.

"Progress has really slowed down and for the last decade or so, change has been modular", said Ariane Hegewisch, a program director at the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR).

In fact, when PayScale controlled for all of these various factors, the wage gap closes to 98%.

Women make less money than men across almost all industries in America, but the disparity is not the same in all fields. Although the New Mexico Fair Pay for Women Act was passed in 2013, we are still waiting for test cases in the courts to define its scope and relevancy as a means for enforcing pay equity in our state. Men dominate fields like IT, math, engineering and sciences, which tend to have higher-paying jobs. Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia are among the states with the smallest wage gaps. A 2007 study, for example, found that while half of men negotiated their salaries, only an eighth of women did the same.
