Texas Democrat to challenge Cruz report

"He has traveled heavily in Texas over the last three months making contacts, barely concealing his political plans", observed the Chronicle. "Congressman Beto O'Rourke has a big announcement to make on Friday". He has toured the state in recent weeks, talking about his prospective Senate campaign in terms that made it sound like he has already reached a decision.

Par for the Democratic course, O'Rourke endorsed Hillary for President in 2016 and served as a superdelegate at the Democratic convention.

U.S. Rep. JoaquĆn Castro, D-San Antonio, also has been considering entering the Senate race and has promised a decision by the end of April. In the 2014 primaries, about 28,000 voters turned out in El Paso County, while nearly 42,000 cast ballots in Castro's home turf of Bexar County.

"So you don't know until you do it", O'Rourke said.

Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, will announce his intention to run for the Senate on Friday in El Paso, Texas, his hometown, the Houston Chronicle reported.

United Nations chief Guterres visits Iraq, calls for protection of civilians
Iraqi witnesses have said air strikes earlier this month killed scores of civilians - with some estimates as high as 400 dead. But Iraqi forces, with the backing of the US-led airstrikes, have since recaptured much of the area.

Castro has developed into a political firebrand for Democrats in the House since securing his seat for the 20th District of Texas in 2013.

While there was a boost of attention for O'Rourke in his bipartisan road trip with Hurd, Castro and his brother Julian have an established statewide identification. His father once was the El Paso County judge, and O'Rourke is a former member of the El Paso city council.

O'Rourke, 44, was first elected to Congress in 2012. Cruz is a lawyer who went to Princeton and Harvard.

From a national perspective, the U.S. Senate race in Texas is an afterthought. An able campaigner, the Texas senator boosted his national prominence past year after finishing second in the crowded 2016 GOP presidential primary.

And while it's not yet clear what 2018 will bring, but the early months of the Trump presidency have been turbulent for the president and congressional Republicans, who last week admitted they couldn't get their party together to support a proposed overhaul of President Obama's signature health care bill.
