FDA Concurs With WHO on Rare Lymphoma Linked to Breast Implants

FDA Links Breast Implants To A Rare Form Of Cancer

The Food and Drug Administration says at least nine women have died of a rare blood cancer after receiving breast implants, and that the agency is officially acknowledging an association between the implants and the disease.

The disease is not breast cancer, but rather an immune system cancer called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. Be aware that most confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL have occurred in women with textured breast implants. The FDA's statement follows 359 reports of cancer developing in implant recipients, including nine fatal cases.

In an update on Tuesday, the agency said it had received 359 reports of the cancer in women with breast implants, but cautioned that such reports are often missing key details, unconfirmed or duplicated. Of the 231 reports which included data on the implant surface, 203 were reported textured while only 28 were reported as smooth implants.

It's not known why the surface of an implant would be a risk factor, but one plastic surgeon and researcher explains to The New York Times that the body has a different reaction to textured implants than it does to smooth implants, because tissue grows in the microscopic grooves of textured implants.

It can be treated by simply removing the implant and the capsule surrounding the implant, the warning says.

The cancer can take about 10 years to develop on average after the implant first goes in and usually stays in the area right around the implant, World Health Organization researchers reported last year in the journal Blood.

Boaty McBoatface, not an actual boat, embarks on first Antarctic mission
The NERC, however, said it would have the final say, and that the most popular name would not necessarily be the one chosen. Boaty will travel back and forth along an abyssal current of AABW through the so-called Orkney Passage.

If you have patients with breast implants, you should continue to provide them routine care and support. FDA continues to collect and evaluate information about ALCL in women with breast implants.

The cancer is not breast cancer, the FDA emphasized.

The FDA is urging women debating whether to get implants to educate themselves about them before agreeing to surgery.

Since 2011, packaging for all implants sold in the US and Canada has listed the possible cancer risk, and advises women to discuss all the risks and options with their doctor.

Safety concerns are a high priority when opting for breast augmentation procedures, as both types of breast implants - saline and silicone - pose a series of health risks. If you already have breast implants, there is no need to change your routine medical care and follow-up. It recommended that women who are considering implants weigh the risks and benefits with their health care providers. Of these, 186 reported implants filled with silicone gel and 126 reported implants filled with saline.
